Steve Goldberg is a prominent Los Angeles based attorney who has been active in Jewish causes for decades. He is now the National Vice Chairman of the ZOA, a member of the board and U.S. delegate for World Likud. a member of the Extended Executive of the World Zionist Organization, Vice President of the Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors in Los Angeles, and a member of the international board of governors of Ariel University in Samaria, Israel. He was the lawyer for the Jewish Defense League in Los Angeles, pro bono. Professionally, he is a partner at the prestigious firm, Manatt, Phelps & Phillips.
He led the ZOA Western Region from 2010-2011, bringing to Los Angeles a creative and powerful array of Zionist programming and activism. These included: speaking engagements with the Consul General, Ari Briggs of Regavim, General Steinberg of NGO Monitor; an evening of a “Taste of Judea and Samaria” with scholar Yechiel Leiter and One Israel Fund’s Marc Prowisor; a screening of student films from Ariel University at the Israel Film Festival as well as a documentary of Herzl, among other films. He led the protest against the Los Angeles Jewish Federation when it unilaterally cancelled a talk by Pamela Geller, and arranged an alternate venue. He also led a scheduled protest against the Santa Monica hotel found liable for discrimination against Jews, which led to the Muslim owner’s denunciation of anti-Semitism, charitable contributions to Zionist causes, and other remunerations to the Jewish community. He co-organized a solidarity rally with other pro-Israel organizations during Israel’s Operation Pillar of Defense. He expanded the local board and returned respect to the ZOA at a time when high turnover of employees caused many members to feel disillusioned by the organization. Under Steve’s leadership, the Western Region developed a Young Professionals board which conducted its own activities, including Shabbat dinners, and more.
He was the lone voice on the ZOA national board that called for transparency and honesty in ZOA’s financial dealings, including disclosure of the ZOA’s loss of its 501c3 status.
